when you are pregnant, certain foods that you once loved may no longer be safe to eat-especially dishes containing raw fish, such as traditional sushi, as much as i love sushi, my doctor advised me to avoid it during pregnancy to protect my baby’s health, however, today was a special day! My brother came to visit and surprised me with a unique and thoughtful gift: homemade sushi prepared without salmon or any raw fish, making it completely safe for pregnant women.
this thoughtful gesture meant a lot to me because i had been craving sushi for months but couldn’t enjoy it due to my pregnancy diet restrictions, that’s why l’m excited to share not only this special moment but also the exact recipe and method so you can easily make this pregnancy-friendly sushi at home.
∆ Ingredients you’ll need:
for the sushi rice :
• 200 g sushi rice ( available in large supermarkets)
• 150ml rice vinegar
• 100 g granulated sugar
• 1/2 cup soy sauce
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 clove garlic, minced
∆ For the fillings and wrapping:
• 1 ripe avocado
• ripe mango
• creme cheese or Philadelphia cheese
• optional : cucumber slices ( a great addition for pregnant women)
∆ for homemade teriyaki sauce:
• 1 small cup water mixed with 1 tsp cornstarch
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 tbsp honey
• 1 tsp ginger powder
Step 1 : cooking the sushi rice without a special cooker
traditionally, sushi rice is cooked in a special rice cooker, since i don’t have one, we used a pressure cooker-a staple in every kitchen, this was my brother’s clever trick to make the rice just as perfect and sticky as if it were prepared in a dedicated sushi pot .

first, rinse the rice thoroughly until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, place the rice in the pressure cooker and add enough water so that it covers the rice by about 1 cm, cook over medium heat until it starts boiling, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let cook for 15 minutes, turn off the hest and leave the lid closed for another 15 minutes-this is the secret to perfectly sticky rice.
Step 2: preparing the rice seasoning
while the rice rests, heat the rice vinegar, salt, and sugar in a small saucepan until fully dissolved, pour this mixture over the rice ensuring every grain is coated, set aside for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Making the teriyaki sauce
in a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, water with cornstarch, garlic, honey, and ginger, cook over low heat until the sauce thickens, then set aside.

Step 4 : Assembling the pregnancy-safe sushi rolls.

cut each nori sheet in half, place one half on a bamboo mat or clean surface, spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly, then add a line of cream cheese, arrange slices of avocado, mango, and optional cucumber on top, roll tightly into a cylinder, then slice into bite-sized pieces .

serve the sushi rolls with homemade teriyaki sauce or sweet chili sauce for an extra kick .
